Introduction
Many students think visa success depends only on grades or bank balance. That is not true.
In 2026, documentation is one of the biggest factors in study-abroad success. A student with an average profile but strong, clear documents can look more reliable than a student with good marks but messy paperwork.
If you are planning to study abroad from Nepal, this checklist will help you prepare early and avoid last-minute stress.
1. Passport
Your passport should be valid and have enough remaining validity for your visa process. If your passport is close to expiry, renew it before starting your application.
Check:
Name spelling
Date of birth
Passport validity
Old passport history if applicable
Travel history pages
2. Academic Documents
Your academic documents prove your education background. These usually include:
SEE/SLC certificate and transcript
+2 certificate and transcript
Bachelorβs documents if applicable
Masterβs documents if applicable
Character certificates
Provisional certificates
Migration certificate if needed
Backlog history if applicable
Your course choice should match your academic background. For example, if you studied management, applying for a completely unrelated technical course without explanation may create doubts.
3. English Language Test
Depending on the country and institution, you may need IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, Duolingo, or other accepted tests.
Some institutions may offer waivers, but visa officers can still consider whether your English ability matches your study plan.
Prepare:
English test score report
MOI letter if applicable
Institution waiver confirmation
Course language requirement proof
4. Offer Letter or Letter of Acceptance
This is one of the most important documents. It proves that a college or university has accepted you.
For Canada, students usually need a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution. For many Canada study permit applicants, PAL/TAL is also required unless exempt. IRCC says most applicants must submit PAL/TAL with their study permit application.
For the UK, students need CAS before applying for a student visa.
5. Financial Documents
Financial documents must prove that you can afford your education and living expenses.
For Canada, IRCC requires students to prove they have enough money for tuition, living expenses, and transportation. For applications submitted on or after September 1, 2025, one student outside Quebec must show CAD $22,895 for living expenses, excluding tuition and transportation.
For the UK, students must show course fees and living costs. Current UK guidance lists Β£1,529 per month in London and Β£1,171 per month outside London, up to 9 months.
Financial documents may include:
Bank balance certificate
Bank statements
Income certificate
Salary slips
Tax documents
Business registration
Audit report
Property valuation
Education loan sanction letter
Loan disbursement proof
Sponsor letter
Relationship certificate
Source of funds explanation
6. Statement of Purpose or Study Plan
Your SOP is not just an essay. It is your story.
A strong SOP should explain:
Why this country
Why this course
Why this university or college
How your past studies connect
How the course helps your career
Who is sponsoring you
Why you will follow visa rules
What your future plan is
For Australia, the Genuine Student requirement asks applicants to explain their current circumstances, why they want to study the course in Australia, how the course benefits them, and any other relevant information. Australiaβs Department of Home Affairs says more weight is given to statements supported by evidence.
7. NOC from Nepal
NOC stands for No Objection Certificate. Nepalβs official NOC portal explains that it is granted by the Government of Nepal for Nepali students studying abroad.
Students often need NOC for education payment and official foreign study processing.
Prepare:
Citizenship
Passport
Offer letter
Academic documents
Payment-related documents
Guardian information if needed
8. Visa Forms and Embassy Documents
Every country has different visa forms and requirements. Do not copy someone elseβs checklist blindly.
Common documents include:
Visa application form
Passport-sized photos
Biometrics appointment
Medical examination
Police report if required
Visa fee payment receipt
Health insurance
Accommodation proof
Travel plan if required
9. Scholarship Documents
If you are applying for scholarships, prepare:
Scholarship application form
Academic merit documents
Recommendation letters
Statement of purpose
CV
Portfolio if required
Certificates of achievement
Financial need proof if needed
10. Pre-Departure Documents
After visa approval, students should prepare:
Visa grant letter
Passport
Ticket
Admission documents
Accommodation details
Airport pickup information
Emergency contacts
Insurance documents
University login details
International SIM or roaming plan
Basic currency exchange
Copies of all documents

Common Mistakes Nepali Students Should Avoid
Do not submit unclear bank documents.
Do not choose a course only because it is cheap.
Do not hide academic gaps.
Do not submit fake experience letters.
Do not copy SOP from the internet.
Do not ignore visa rule changes.
Do not wait until the last week to prepare documents.
